| Diamond | The diamond is native carbon in isometric crystals,
often octahedrons with rounded edges. It is usually
colorless, but some are yellow, green, red, pink, blue, and even
black. These colors are caused by impurities by other minerals, ie. nitrogen: yellow, boron: blue, crystal irregularities: pinks, browns and reds. It is the hardest (scale 10) mineral known, yet it can be crushed or broken. The diamond
as found in nature (called a rough diamond) is cut, for
use in jewelry, into various forms with many reflecting
faces, or facets, by which its brilliancy is much
increased. The 58 facet round cut diamond is called brilliant. [Middle English diamaunt, from Old French diamant, from Medieval Latin diamas, diamant- alteration of Latin adamas; bible adamant.] |
| Diamondoids | Microscopic small diamonds in crude oil, with a weight of one billionth of a billionth of a carat.
